The next time the elevator swung open and a man asked if we were going down, I replied that we were going downstairs. Going down was neither a prayer point nor what anyone wanted. The awakening also led to a regular affirmation of going up whenever the lift was headed in the other direction. Over time I have come to appreciate how words could make all the difference even when they are supposed to be casual comments.
