He had to be managed, to douse a potential meltdown. At that point, keeping promises no longer mattered, saving the relationship was. It took years before the reconnection, in circumstances where memories had to define decisions. Thoughts of the unpleasantness of the past he appeared to have forgotten, was enough to shut a partly open door.
