His colleague had stepped out, leaving him alone to receive the gift, and with the sole assignment to ensure that his co-worker received an equal share. But he was unfaithful, lying about what he got and proceeding to underpay his associate. For him, it was a smart move, but the discovery foreclosed the possibility of subsequent goodwill from the stranger he was only meeting for the first time.
