We were at the intersection, waiting for the opportune moment to cross to the connecting road, when a gentle rap on the window got our attention. A uniformed lady law enforcement officer signalled, and as the glass lowered, politely spoke almost in a whisper that we were driving against one-way traffic, and advised us to avoid a repeat. Until then, there was not a hint by anyone – on at least 10 previous occasions of taking that side road, that we had ignorantly been daring the law.
