The stretch just before Abwor, Plateau State, Nigeria, was lined with tricky turns, with mountains to the right and a deep valley to the left. Labourers worked on the edges, to halt the advance of eroding fringes of the narrow road. To navigate the snaky route, we had to snail it through, despite the distance to be covered and the capacity of our vehicle for speed. The alternative was a plunge into the deep hole from which rescue was virtually impossible.
